LNG Canada : A major milestone in our LNG Tank journey: cool-down has begun!

The arrival of the first LNG carrier marked a historic moment for the LNG Canada project. This inaugural cargo initiated the cool down sequence, allowing the Storage Tank to safely reach cryogenic conditions — a decisive step toward full operation.

❄️ Certification, Cold-down & Filling: the LNG storage tank enters operation

Before cool down and initial filling, the tank earned its final certification from the BC Energy Regulator (BCER), the Authority overseeing energy infrastructure in British Columbia.
This officially confirms full compliance with all technical, environmental, and safety requirements.

📋 Regulatory approval built on exemplary quality performance
• Complete traceability of all construction and commissioning activities
• Rigorous technical documentation at every stage of the project
• Compliance with international LNG standards
• Fire fighting systems fully commissioned and tested

🌡️ A controlled cool down to –162 °C

With certification in hand, the tank moved into its final commissioning phase:
• Gradual cooling to –162 °C, the LNG storage temperature
• Thermal behavior fully aligned with engineering predictions
• 9% nickel steel inner tank and insulation verified under real cryogenic conditions
• Structural integrity confirmed throughout the cooling process

The expertise of owner’s (LNG Canada) start up and operations teams in cryogenic systems, LNG carriers operations, and safety protocols enabled flawless execution — from coordinating ship berthing to safely managing LNG transfer into the tank.
